Men at Work #9

A common sight since the non-smoking legislation. Those who haven't kicked the habit stand in the doorway of their place of work for a quick cigarette.

Our state government just added a one dollar a pack tax this week. Should be a lot fewer smokers this year.

This looks like my boyfriend, who has to smoke outside, even though he works on double-glazed windows, he has to go to the sidewalk when he's on duty. Poor bastards. Oh well... I have to say, it relieves me to come home from a night out and NOT have to smell like smoke!

Funny pose!

I remember being in London when everyone who smoked (at the pub) stayed indoors, and the non-smokers were all outside drinking. LOL

In Vancouver you no longer can stand in doorways to smoke. You have to be a certain distance (I think 5 metres?) away.
Glad I quit long ago - who can afford it anyways!?!

I love that he's standing next to all of the garbage cans. The smell of the smoke probably overwhelms their odor.

It is a long time since we Canadians have had this law - see Angie's post above; we've already had to deal with people blocking doorways while they smoke. I remember not long after it was first enacted. Peter Gzowski, journalist, raconteur and smoker, told a story about being in the Yukon. He asked a couple from the southern States what they thought of Whitehorse. They thought it was lovely but it was too bad about all the prostitutes. It took him a little while to discover that what they were seeing was all the office workers (mostly female) from the government building standing outside for their smoke.

This picture brings back some memories I had working at a restaurant when I was in London two years ago. I had a regular customer in his fifties who comes every afternoon begging for a free pint of rice. He drove a BMW and worked as a consultant at a local university. He parked his car very far away and did the begging routine at several other shops nearby. The whole situation was kind of strange if you ask me. One of my funny London experiences.

Nice picture, Mo. Thanks for sharing.

I think the pose is that final draught: he his about to take the butt between his fingers and *flick* it into the gutter, and then stroll back inside.

There is a lot of debris outside that shop: it looks like he could be a plasterer or painter involved in renovations.

I like the prostitute story ...
