Godzone

New Zealander's are a hardy bunch, not much that they can't do. They invented bungy jumping. Who else would think tying a rubber band around your ankles and jumping off a cliff was fun?

However the recent disaster in Christchurch is too much even for the hardy bunch they are. This earthquake will be NZ's worst ever disaster. And it's not over yet. After shocks will continue for some time. The death toll has reached 145. Parts of the city are still without water and electricity.
Here is a link to see some of the devastation.

NZ is small. Just 4 million people. Everyone knows someone in Christchurch. Rebuilding is going to take a long time. Yes there is insurance and the earthquake fund. I've just done a quick calculation, taking the estimated costs at the moment and deducting the insurance and earthquake fund. Looks to me as though there will still be something in the region of 4 billion to find. That's an awful lot of money for 4 million people to find.

Just a small donation from each of you will help people rebuild their lives.

There are some whacky churchgoers among the evangelical far right who think natural disasters are triggered by the wrath of God for some evil doings by the downtrodden folks -- but I am not a subscriber to their drivel.

It is indeed a sad day when natural disasters kills anything but they do. I hope Christchurch gets the funds to build anew with earthquake-safer construction. I know the new construction in earthquake prone California has building regulations that enables big buildings to move on rollers and springs. Imagine that?

I read some of the news items in your link, and the survivor stories are astonishing. After seeing the Mayor of Christchurch on tv, I feel certain that the resiliency of the people will carry them forward. Thanks for t he link!

The people I feel sorry for are those who don't yet know what has happened to their loved ones. Hope and dread is a terrible mix.

Beautiful post Mo! I've been following the news by watching the online London Newspapers. They have had some of the best coverage.

it is shocking. Personally I never expect bad things to happen in New Zealand, either, for some reason.

Thanks you for sharing that link with us. I hope that all the funds needed are raised and that the New Zealanders are able to rebuild quickly.

NZ is a country I want to visit some time. But not for bungy jumping.

Thanks for the links.

We don't have that sort of disasters in Sweden. Only landslides sometimes.

I hope your friends and family in NZ are alright.

This is such an incredible tragedy and disaster Mo and I can only imagine how distressing it must be for you and people back home. I think people should dig deep and donate (but please don't clog up the Red Cross site if you're not going to donate!)

Thanks for the link. Such a terrible tragedy. A dear friend of ours went back from England to Christchurch last year only to lose her home during the quake. Fortunately she's safe. Other friends lost their house in Abruzzo, Italy a couple years ago. Quakes are terrifying as you are impotent against them. Ciao. A.
