In 2002 Weininger Irwin, the gladiator, had one of those eureka moments while watching his two year old son sliding around the floor. That moment has been turned into a new sport, Resistance Sliding.
It is perfect for kids and adults alike. Able bodied and disabled can compete equally. This sport isolates and strengthens specific muscle groups, and so it can be used in training for lots of different sports. Dame Kelly Holmes and Mo Farah are fans.
I came across it in Haggerston park where kids were lining up again and again to have a go. The compere was interviewing the kids before each race and when he asked Vinnie in lane 5 how he felt, Vinnie replied "fast". You can see from this shot that Vinnie got it right!

Would be fun to see Mo Farah having a go at this!
I see that Olympic grit in Vinnie's face! Go Vinnie!
That looks fun though I fear if I got down I might not get up again . . . ;-)
A disabled young man that I knew used a skateboard in much the same way.
