Bonfire

Guy Fawkes night is the 5th of November. This year it falls on a Wednesday, so we have lots of bonfires and fireworks displays to go to. Great news when you live with a pyromaniac. First up Saturday's Bonfire at Battersea Park. It'll be an explosive week from this site.

What's it all about? Well here's a wee rhyme that sums it up:

Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot!
A stick or a stake for King James' sake
Will you please to give us a fagot
If you can't give us one, we'll take two;
The better for us and the worse for you!

(note: A fagot - Is a bundle of twigs, sticks, or branches bound together.)

Amazing; I took an almost identical photo last night! I'll be posting it in a few days' time. Good shot (obviously) LOL.

Nice posting, Mo. It looks like you'll have a hot time on the old town. I hope it doesn't get out of hand like it does in some cities here on Halloween Eve when people light fires and burn buildings down.

(In this country some people call gay people faggots. What they don't realize is that gay people used to be tied up and burned like faggots/bundles of sticks at the feet of other people who were burned for other reasons.)

Fun Mo and great photo.

PJ, intersting, I never knew that. Sad bit of history.

A few years ago, I was in London over this holiday and I was amazed at the number of fires and fireworks displays I saw throughout the week. On the night of November 1st, I was taking the train back to London from Wales and it seemed like every little town we passed had a huge fire going.

When I lived in Manchester, the locals would start the fireworks and bonfires in October and go on until after Guy Fawke's night. They had a slightly different version of the song:

Remember, remember October, November and half of December.

Great fire photo! Thanks for the second part of the rhyme, I never new it until now!

With regards our Farmers Market - yes, all the things are local. I think the furthest supplier is from Worcester. It has a great range of produce. One of the best is an Indian chap who makes samosa's. They are delicious!

A few years ago, before 9/11, I was flying to London and I asked to visit the cockpit. They let me in and in the end I also did the landing there. It was the 5th of nov. and I remember so many fires scattered in the dark land beneath the plane...

I spent a Guy Fawkes' Night in London back in 2003. It was a night of bright flashes and loud bangs, to be sure!

So, is the word "fagots" where the British slang for cigarette came from?

Greg - I love the other version of the poem you posted!

In the meantime, I see once and again the "V for vendetta" movie!
