The Lavender Garden

"Here's your sweet lavender, sixteen sprigs a penny. That you will find my ladies will smell as sweet as any London lavender seller's cry. circa 1900"

So reads the the plaque to the entrance of this garden in Vauxhall Gardens. It goes on to say the garden was created in partnership with Vauxhall Motors to celebrate its centenary in 2003.

For those familiar with the British marque of General Motors: Vauxhall's first ironworks and then car factory was on Wandsworth Road, or rather 'manufactory' as the then 'horseless carriages' were hand built. Two years into car production in 1905, they moved out to Luton, Bedfordshire where the Falkes family still owned a large tract of land originally granted by King John in the 13th century. The name Vauxhall is a result of centuries of chamfering the name 'Falkes Hall' and the car's griffin logo originates from the family's coat of arms.

I wonder if the scent of lavender is wafting through the air here. You have framed this photo so beautifully.

There's something to be said about a beautiful lavender garden or field. I went to one down in Sussex a few years ago and could have wandered those fields forever and remain content.

IleDuVelant's comment is most interesting.
Lavender is one of my favourite flowers and scents.

So it's a new Vauxhall Gardens, then, not the old pleasure ground?Must check it out. You find some good things.

Though my Grandparents lived in London and mother grew up there and I lived there a couple of times over the years I have never been to Vauxhall. I recall mentions of the pleasure gardens at Vauxhall being notorious for pickpockets and ladies of the night (the day also).
