Ted meets Bonnie

Spring … it’s called “Umbrella” or “Brolly” season here in London.  The Doll said “Ted this weather is making me want fish “n” chips again”.  What? so soon after the last lot? It turned out she had seen a new seafood restaurant in Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, and thought we should check it out.  Exmouth market is a little cobbled street stacked full of great restaurants, and funky shops, and lately the original inhabitants (like Moro) have been joined by some pretty groovy newcomers.  Like yes.. you guessed it  … Bonnie Gull Seafood Café.

I liked it immediately. The staff were friendly, they didn’t make me sit down the back away from the action, and every time I ate all the delicious bread in the basket they brought more.  I was on my 6th slice when the Doll intervened and said “Ted you've got crumbs all down your front!”.

Now the thing about Bonnie Gull is that they work directly with the fishing boats and so the menu changes daily based on what has been caught and is spanking fresh.  I started with Scottish razor clams that were so good I had eaten them all before the Doll could get her camera out. Next I had hand-picked crab meat on toast, with avocado, and some huge chunky chips cooked in beef dripping on the side .. heaven!! Even my side of slaw had samphire in it, how cool is that.

The doll of course had what she had come for - fish and chips.  She said the fish was cooked to perfection and she ate ALL of her chips – much to my distress as I was hoping for a run at her leftovers.

They have a great wine list and they serve bubbly wines in those lovely coupé champagne glasses that were said to have been designed based on a part of Marie Antoinette’s anatomy ... oops maybe I shouldn't say that in public - children stop reading 2 sentences ago please.

Bonnie Gull and her sister Seafood Shack in Fitzrovia prove that you don’t have to be by the seaside to have fresh, good quality, well-cooked seafood in comfortable surroundings, at very reasonable prices … even by London standards.  Go go go …

Oh great, now I'm craving fish and chips and they aren't so easy to get here in the desert.

Ted and the Doll, thanks for this fine restaurant review. I would LOVE to give the fish and chips at Bonnie Gull a try.
