Art and Medicine

Henry Welcome was an American who began his career as a travelling salesman and finished as an Englishman having created one of the worlds largest pharmaceutical companies with a heavy focus on research.  Under his will (in 1936) he requested his (not insubstantial) wealth be used to set up what is now the worlds largest independent charitable trust to fund research into human and animal health.

The Welcome Collection explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future.  Among the collections "past collection" are items that Henry Welcome collected in his many travels.  With an immense library and resources, not to mention the innovative exhibitions, it's not just appealing to academics and health professionals, but to anyone who is curious by nature.

Museum Visitis - Welcome Collection

Science and art come together at the Welcome Collection.  The current exhibition is Foreign Bodies, common ground, a diverse body of work that came out of six resiedencies from artists who worked in research centres from six countries around the world as part of the art in global health project.

The works are as diverse as the artists and countries they worked in.  Art installations, photographs, video, sculpture, painting, it is fascinating to see how widely the theme has been interpreted.

THe exhibition is on until February 2014 giving you ample time to get along and see it.

Hidden Beauty

I love seeing the working side of buildings, pipes, wires basements. All I find have beauty rather like sculpture really. Do any of you share my fascination?
