Shakespeare and Gardens

A stunning day for the opening of the RHS flower show at Hampton Court.  There is plenty to do and see plus some great entertainment, music, bands and a bit of Shakespeare.

35,000 Flowers

What happens to all the plants and flowers when the Chelsea flower show finishes?  Those that enter must include the answer to this question as part of their entry application.  The majority of garden installations and plants go to local communities and charities.

Today 35,000 flowers cover the steps leading from Regents Canal to Granary Square in front of St Martin's University of the Arts.  The colourful display will then be offered to the public.  So if you want some marigolds, geraniums and petunias, head over there on 7th June between 10am and 6pm.  All the proceeds will be given to Global Generation, the folk behind the skip gardens.

The Pub's in Flower

Not just a green wall, the pub's walls are bursting with flowers.  I was only passing by.  Honest.

Pretty in the Wilderness

Flower or weed?  It's popped up to remind us what colour the sun is, least we forget. A very real possibility at present.

For those of you who are more serious about your flower photographs the Notting Hill Home Ownership is running a competition looking for stunning blooms photographed in the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.  The competition runs until 1 July,  details can be found here.

Columbia market dates back to 1869, originally a covered food market of 400 stalls. Nowadays it is stalls on the street and in hidden courtyards that appear only on Sundays. Plants, flowers and bric a brac all on sale, with the traders encouraging you to buy with their sales pitch "beautiful roses, just like you my lovely, 2 bunches for a fiver" ... how can you resist.

Snow Drops

The first signs of spring. I also spotted a couple of daffodils nearly ready to burst into flower yesterday.

Two for a Fiver

Although a bit quieter than most Sundays, the Colombia Road Flower Market was still pretty lively. Go a little later and you'll get great bargains. Bunches of flowers for a fiver or a tenner.

Snowdrops

A grasshopper's view of the snowdrops a couple of weeks ago. They're finished now and the daffodils are slowly arriving. In the UK most snowdrops are found around churches, graveyards and priories.
In medieval times the church planted them for the feast of candelmass. This feast for the purification of the virgin mother takes place 40 days after Christmas.
Whether fact or myth I don't know, but certainly is where you will see wonderful displays of these delicate flowers
