Jousting and Executions
Tranquil enough now but this same spot was once a place for jousting, tournaments and executions, as well as a market. Smithfield meat market still exists (for now) although in ancient times it was known as Smethefelde or Smoothfield. It lay just outside the city walls and the fields surrounding the market were large enough to hold the live animals that were brought for slaughter. Now the animals arrive as meat carcasses from all over Europe.

The Breakdancers
Breakdancing buskers are getting younger. The bigger of the two boys had drawn a bit of a crowd to his very polished act. So inspired was he that a wee lad from the crowd wandered over to mimic the steps. The older boy danced his way over to the younger to show him the moves. All without a word being spoken.

Myatt's Fields
Myatt's Park is now a heritage site so will be enjoyed by future generations, thanks to the efforts of the local residents and the Minet family. The Minet family were among the Huguenots who fled France in the 17th century. A century later Hugh Minet purchased the estate that this park was a tiny part of. Another century on his descendant James Minet who was very philanthropic gifted this land from the estate to create a public park. It was named after Joseph Myatt a tenant market gardener who grew cabbages, rhubarb and strawberries here in the 19th century.

A View from the East
Close to Mile End and looking towards Canary Wharf where you can make out the tall buildings on the horizon. The building with the triangle on top was the tallest building in London until quite recently when the building frenzy in the City of London began, and we now have the Shard taking the leading role as the tallest building.
The lovely park like gardens has an art gallery on one side and new apartment buildings on the other. Regeneration of the area began with the Olympics and is still taking place. The Olympic Park is just up the road from this spot.

Elves in the Old Oak Tree
Finding the elves and fairies hidden in an old tree is as exciting for as an adult as it always was as a child. Down the bottom of the garden, in this case Kensington Garden nor far from the Diana memorial is the trunk of an old black oak tree, with dozens of magical creatures hidden in its nooks and crannies.
