Westminster Hall. The oldest part of Westminster Palace, built between 1097 and 1099. An incredibly impressive hall, try and visualise the coronation banquets that took place here for nearly 800 years. Or the state trials and impeachments, such as those of guy Fawkes or Charles I.

Spectacular hall Mo, and yes it is very fascinating to imagine the historical events that have happened there.
This is gorgeous Mo.
This is so beautiful!
That's the third dimension, isn't tit? Time. Trying to get one's head around the length of time this building has stood and the number of events that have been witnessed between these walls. History is such an impressive dimension, that we do not pay enough homage to.
All that history confined between these walls. If only one could close their eyes and meditate here and see it run like a movie in their head.
Huh. I had the opposite reaction. It reminded me of a warehouse, much less impressive than the rest of the building. But I'll admit I'm probably a bit more jaded than the average 15th C Briton.
Truly a remarkable place.
This part of the Palace of Westminster was one of the few parts to survive the fire of 1834. This zoomable map shows how its orientation differs from that of the later Barry-Pugin building: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/crace/p/007000000000011u00056000.html
It is the wooden hammerbeam roof which allowed such a large column-free space to be achieved with pre-industrial revolution technology. This link offers a closer inspection: http://www.parliament.uk/visiting/online-tours/virtualtours/westminster-hall-tours/westminster-hall/
