A Wagon of Rubbish

I haven't abandoned aglimpseoflondon (in case you were worried), it was an enforced temporary arrangement courtesy of BT.

Finally and after hours of calls and chats they sent an engineer who could confirm we had no line at all.  Oops he said.  Despite a few hours earlier been told it was all repaired and working well.  Another visit and rewired somewhere in the street, communication has been restored.  Only problem now is how I am going to manage the massive speed of 2mbs from my restored broadband.

Wishing you all a great New Year and a fabulous 2017.

A Load of Old Rubbish

Well it is actually - a load of old rubbish - the rubbish barges that take the waste away to landfills.

On The Bus

Rubbish on the buses and underground has been a wee project I have been dipping into from time to time.  Not an easy one to photograph, especially when trying to capture the litter creation in action. Hence why I have a small DSLM camera in my handbag or pocket that I can whip out without being noticed.

Rubbish

These carts and their drivers are what saves us from wading through a rubbish tip every day.

Ever tried to find a rubbish bin in London? Rare as hens teeth they are. Something to do with terrorists. We have these laws that put us all under suspicion of what I'm not sure. Councils however use these laws to see what we do with our rubbish.
You are encouraged to send photos of anyone you see littering, flytipping (that's colloquial for putting your rubbish in someone else's bin) and other such activities. Councils themselves have been known to clamber up ladders to keep an eye on the elderly in case an apple core or two makes into Joanna Smith's bin. An excellent use of anti terrorist law. We have plenty to fear from apple core vandals.
Discussion is also taking place about putting chips in our bins to analyse what we do with our waste. Did you put that council flyer in the recycle bin or did you burn it creating unnecessary co2 emissions.
Couldn't we just have a few more bins on the streets guys?

Somethings are best done the old fashioned way.

Rubbish

Londoners produce masses of it. About 15% (700,000 tonnes) of it travel by barge from central London to landfills in Essex.
Many want the site were these containers leave from to be turned into apartments. Mostly developers but also neighbours who want the value of their properties to increase.
Others want more rubbish transported by barge. If this lot was transported by lorry we would see an increase of 100,000 lorries per year on the road.

Planning for the Olympics especially improving travel has meant that anything that reduces road congestion is favoured. Looks like the barges may win.

Glutton

Glutton is seriously needed. Trying to find a rubbish bin in London is harder than trying to find a needle in a haystack. The bins disappeared when fears of bombs were at a red alert. Trouble is they have never reappeared.
