The Spies and the Residents

The residents are the ones looking down over the spies, in their lofty tower. The spies are the ones in their pretty art deco building.  And in between more residents in their apartment blocks.  What they all share is a lovely view of the river.

Remember the egg and spoon race and  the sack race? These kids prove it is as much fun as it always was.

Gay Sports Day

Yesterday's Gay Sports Day was held in true Olympic spirit. Look at that moon hopping what a star. Perhaps a little more training would have benefited some of the other team members.

Keeping the egg on the spoon proved to be an enormous challenge.

The rainbow warriorettes unfortunately didn't have what it takes to win the tug-o-war.

Cathedral in Her Hands

That's St Paul's Cathedral she's holding. I had to hang over the edge of Vaxhaull Bridge to get this for you. A passerby not sure if I was planning to jump or not. Each side of the bridge has these amazing huge statues that are very difficult to see. The best view is by boat but even then you only get a view from the route the boat takes under the bridge. The upstream side the sculptures by F W Pomeroy are pottery, engineering, agriculture and the one pictured here; architecture. The downstream side sculptures by Alfred Drury are education, fine art, science and local government.

The Lavender Garden

"Here's your sweet lavender, sixteen sprigs a penny. That you will find my ladies will smell as sweet as any London lavender seller's cry. circa 1900"

So reads the the plaque to the entrance of this garden in Vauxhall Gardens. It goes on to say the garden was created in partnership with Vauxhall Motors to celebrate its centenary in 2003.

Bottles

A group of bottles with interesting contents I spotted in a salvage yard. I've no idea what all the potions are, I'm relying on you all to tell me.

Vauxhall Farm

The first few pages of Mark's Book (see yesterday's post) walking the Victoria he walked through Spring Gardens near Vauxhall station. I decided to take a look at the park known as Vauxhall Pleasure gardens in the 1660's. Where one could commune with nature and be entertained, listening to a bit of Handel.

In the 21st century communing with nature is ball games, horse riding and communicating with the animals in the city farm.
